Balayage – useful tips

SPECIAL BALAYAGE OFFER: A COMPLIMENTARY REFRESH GLOSS AFTER SIX WEEKS. (QUOTE OUR BLOG WHEN YOU BOOK)

We’ve received a lot of interested inquiries about balayage (see our previous entry). Curious, great minds think alike! As we thought: people are really out there, looking for that more bespoke, natural highlight effect.

EP Ombre

Balayage: Ombre.
Stylist Elvinas

So we had a moodboard session, asking whether ombre, the balayage technique of gradually lightening hair strands from darker roots to lighter tips, was just a trend? As soon as these new looks appear on staged reality tv shows (not mentioning any particular) they’re often “over” already.

But actually, we think “no!” There will always be demand. Balayage and ombre have quickly become part of the lexicon of hair. Because people will always want beautiful, wearable, striking and glossy hair.

Our advice with balayage is, keep it subtle. Senior Stylist Adam says: “Stay in tune with your skin tone. If your hair is short then limit the dark to light colour change. If it’s long, you can play with a wider colour spectrum.”

And think about the condition of your hair. Prepare it well for the colour process. Use Bain de Force (Kerastase) for example. Or book one of our Fusio-Dose treatments when you come in.

Well conditioned hair = richer tone and longer lasting colour = more gorgeous hair.

As a West End salon we’re aware of all sorts of on-trend, fashion-forward looks. We’re certain Britain is ahead of the pack. But we also look to Italy for the very best inspiration and techniques, and as a team under Creative Director Sergio Giannasso we have that Italian DNA in our blood, through our training (including freehand hair painting skills), sense of style and education on hair.

If you want to do some picture research before your next balayage appointment, get yourselves on twitter or instagram and type in a few hashtags #hair #haircolour #balayage #ombre. See what you get back. And feel free to retweet to us or share on Facebook – so we know exactly what you’re looking for when you come in.

Going platinum blonde? Bleaching hair the safest way

If you’re thinking of switching your naturally darker hair to a light / platinum blonde our advice is “Come see us first!” Bleaching hair is one of those big decisions you want to take with care and at Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up you have a ready team of experts who can talk you through the options.

Bleach is a chemical made of peroxides, ammonias, and lightening agents that actively remove the pigment melanin from the hair shaft. This process is permanent, and your hair will have to grow out in order to return to its natural colour. The process can also stress hair and make it quite wiry, losing its natural silkiness.

We say:

If you prefer your hair to be short, it tends to be in a better natural condition prior to any colour process, and is therefore easier to maintain once bleached.

If your hair is longer, we highly recommend combining the bleach process with a very, very good conditioning treatment, to be applied afterwards, that will bring the hair’s natural softness back again. We have a Luxe Blow-dry service that does exactly this.

Once bleached, we also strongly advise you come in every four to five weeks for a bleach retouch, to retain that overall platinum effect.

Elvinas Close upAt Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up we consider the consultation stage vital to getting the best results for our clients. Everybody’s hair is different so there is no one size fits all when it comes to the bleach formulas used.

We also have our stylist Elvinas (who has regularly bleached his hair for the past year) on hand and loaded with valuable first-hand knowledge of the bleaching process, the likely results and life in general as a platinum blond!

Call us on 0207 240 9973 to book your colour consultation now.

The best salon hair treatments

THE CEUTIC TREATMENTS FROM L’OREAL

Three fast, effective hair treatments that we do at Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up, to create amazing hair! All you do is sit back in our comfortable chairs, close your eyes to the music and conversation, and let us work their magic.

Fiberceutic

Fiberceutic (botox for hair): This formula contains molecules that target and attach themselves to areas where the keratin – the protein which makes up hair fibres – is damaged. The molecules set to, penetrating the hair sheaf to seal gaps and breakages. Result: soother, stronger and thicker for longer. This has been a very popular hit with our clients. Price £15.

Cristalceutic

Cristalceutic: This is the treatment for enhancing and protecting colour radiance for up to six weeks. It ensures your colours stay fresh and shiny by trapping colour molecules inside the hair fibre. It is also a home care treatment so you can extend your colour lifetime even further. Comes in boxes of six doses – recommended two per week. The in-salon treatment is £15.

Volumetry

Volumetry (72 hour volume boost): Softens and detangles, while boosting volume from the root. This treatment is ideal for transforming fine and flat hair into a more glamorous full and bouncy look that lasts. At Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up, we’re famous for our blow-dries and we love this product! Price £15.

Densitive

In combination with any of the above, we recommend the Densitive vitamin supplements from Kerastase, for re-densifying, faster hair growth. These contain taurine: an amino acid that accumulates in the hair bulb to help maintain its stability: also, nutritional Green Tea and Grape Seed Polyphenols. And Zinc for production of keratin. Price £22.

Hair loss, thinning and spot alopecia

Spot Alopecia 3At Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up we receive a lot of inquiries from clients about hair loss or thinning.

Everybody typically loses up to 100 hairs a day, but occasionally healthy hair will thin dramatically or fall out in very localised areas of the scalp – a condition commonly referred to as “spot alopecia”. If you do experience any of the above – and many people do – FEAR NOT!

Hair usually grows back. It may take a few months or up to a year. The good point is that it almost always grows back and there is plenty you can do to ensure it grows back thick and healthy.

The actual shedding could simply be the result of pregnancy, childbirth, diet, certain medications we take, even plain old stress! Hair reacts by prematurely entering into the so-called telogen (resting) phase in its life cycle. What you can do is is kickstart it back to its natural cycle. That usually means getting enough sleep, eating well and taking healthy exercise. Vitamin D (actually a hormone!) also plays a crucial role in healthy hair so make sure you’re getting enough of that as well.

Steroid creams and steroid injections are options, but here at the salon we stock and recommend more gentle treatments with Arginine-based shampoos.

Stimuliste Stimuliste shampooStimuliste from Kerastase (RRP £42), for example, features some incredible ingredients for keeping hair healthy and dense. Senior Stylist Adam Bennett, our in-house Kerastase Ambassador, has this to say about it:

“The Stimuliste Spray from Kerastase works with Arginine, Gluco Lipids, Vitamin PP AND Aminexil which actually is a total dream combination in the fight against hair loss. Arginine makes sure your hair is getting all the nutrition it needs way down at the bulb of the hair. The Vitamin PP is a clever element that helps produce two enzymes – it helps keratin production and ensures the circulation at the root is working as it should. Gluco Lipids make sure the hair fibre is strong and healthy and the Aminexil reduces the build up and hardening of collagen in the skin, so hair grows through properly without being strangled (and, as a result, much finer).

Daily use of the spray, coupled with the Bain Stimuliste shampoo (RRP £16.50) is one sure way to prepare your scalp for when the hair grows back.”

For men who suffer so-called male pattern hair loss, there is another very effective prescription-only treatment on the market called propecia. This actively lowers the level of DHT, a hormone linked to hair thinning / loss. It does however only work with men and usually retails from £90 – £115 for a 90 day course.

Hair care is something we at Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up consider a vital part of our customer service. We use our knowledge and experience to ensure your hair gets the best treatments and products it can. If you have any questions or require any advice on what best to do for your hair, just book in for a complimentary consultation and we’ll be happy to help. Just call us! Tel: 0207 240 9973.

And it’s due mostly to the stylish French and Italians (plus a sprinkling of beauty editors and leading Hollywood filmstars) that balayage is becoming so popular worldwide.

As a team of professional stylists trained in Italy / by Italians / for Italians, we consider balayage as one of our signature services.

Balayage 01Balayage 03Senior stylist Adam Bennett says: “It’s more personal and technical. You need to understand the process, how the colours oxidise, their consistency, the placement and brush strokes, as well as how the hair naturally falls. That’s how to achieve the results you really want.”

We would recommend balayage as the perfect way to enhance natural colours, whether you are blonde or brunette. It can accentuate curls beautifully. And if you‘ve never tried colour in a salon before, this may be the right service for you.

The technique gives a softer, more seamless colour lift that grows out naturally and is easier to maintain. Just pop in for a gloss service in between appointments, and we can keep your hair sparkling for weeks.

Dip Dye using BalayageOr, if you prefer, think crazy dramatic dip-dyed looks with the most amazing range of pinks, purples, blues and yellows.

Our commitment at Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up is always to get the best results. That’s why we’ve been roadtesting a range of balayage brushes.

You know what? The best brushes, in our opinion, sell just around the corner at our local art shop!

Thanks Cass Art .

Beards : Attractive and Sexy or Not For Me?

Johnny HarringtonHave you noticed the rising number of young gents sporting beards at the moment?

John Lewis certainly has. Hirsute model Johnny Harrington is the unmistakable face fronting its latest menswear campaign.

Matthew McCormack, John Lewis’s  buying director, describes this look as a little deconstructed, kind of smart and with a great sense of style. “A hard-working, everyday-hero kind of  bloke.’

And he’s not the only one to think so.

Vivienne Westwood 2
Ricky Hall

Vivienne Westwood made heavily frosted beards a feature of her rugged, mountaineering 2012 menswear look during Milan Fashion Week.

While another bearded model – Ricky Hall – has never been busier. An obvious choice for the latest marketing campaign from men’s barbers Murdok.

Beard BeanieAnd for those of us who can’t grow a beard, there’s even a beard beanie on the market. One for you, ladies!!!

We think there’s an unmistakeable trend in style right now and we’re wondering why! A reflection of our times? More freedom to be relaxed? More of us who’d normally shave for work now working from home? Is time so precious we’ve surrendered our morning shave? Have costume dramas (Downton Abbey) engendered new social aspirations to be Edwardian-style English country gents!

Kitoko oilThe Cool FixWhat we would say to anybody with a beard, and for the sake of those closest to you, is GROOM IT! Beards have their needs, you know. And don’t be surprised if your beard is different to the colour of your hair…   ‘cos that often happens.

This is where our service is second to none. Adam – our fully bearded Senior Stylist – says beards need to be combed, conditioned, softened. Book your beard appointment and we’ll advise and style yours to best match the shape of your face. We’d strongly recommend our popular Kitoko oil (portable size £5.99) as the perfect conditioner. And for the right products to apply on skin around the beard, we suggest The Cool Fix.

Best case scenario. Research says beards keep your skin looking fresher, reduce the signs of ageing, protect from the damaging effects of the natural elements. Hmmm. maybe we all should grow one!

Worst case. Kissing becomes a meal / facial scrub and you’re reminded of some Victorian granddad.

What do you think? More importantly girls, do you find beards attractive?

Fashion hair A/W2013

London Fashion Week, the Brit Awards, Milan: it’s happening all around us and it’s not all about the clothes. Our eyes are peeled for some of the hottest hair trends on show.

Our favourites so far?

Mulberry AW13TomFordAW13MaryKatrantzouAW13

Mulberry: disproportioned, fuzzy, rich textures worn with hair loose and romantic, tucked into collars.

Tom Ford: sleek, side parted hair with his O-T-T, clashing prints.

Mary Katrantzou: amazing geometric fringes coupled with mid height sleeked back ponies, to match her focus on shape and silhouette.

We were also really taken by Taylor Swift and Lisa Snowdon’s look at the Brits on Wednesday night.

Taylor SwiftBrit Awards - Red Carpet ArrivalsLisa Snowdon 2

23-year-old Taylor turned out stunning (Harry Styles and Robbie Williams both thought so too!), opting for straight hair, super shiny, with a show stopping fringe (and some black smokey eye).

Lisa went for a side parting, loosely waved and pinned.

90s GrungeWhat we’ve noticed…. Last season’s 90s grunge and dual texture look is still hot.

Pair it with a deep side parting, tong random sections for a kink and add some texturising dust in at the roots for some volume.

Sprinkle a little through the ends and work for a textured finish, alternatively, use a shine spray for a more subtle shine/dual texture.

Our trend prediction: anything low down – buns, ponies or accessories. The low pony dominated the catwalks again. For a more modern look aim for a textured finish. Blow-dry with your fingers using Bumble & Bumble Styling Lotion to prep the hair. Some gentle back combing at the roots will add a great silhouette to the finished look. Gather hair loosely at the nape of the neck, secure and wrap a section of the pony around it’s base to hide the band. Mist some hairspray over the tips of your fingers (we love L’Oreal Professional Tecni Art Fix Anti Frizz) and massage the roots for a looser, wispier texture.

Eyelash Extensions

Image

When leading businesswoman Heather McGregor, of Taylor Bennett, openly admits on Radio 4 (Jan 20) she has her lash extensions redone before any critical business meeting, you pause for a nano-second and picture.

Leaders like her, pacing the boardroom, eyes fluttering through a pair of massive blinkers?

Not quite..

Heather McGregorEyelash extensions are on trend right now because they’ve “arrived” as a serious style option. The tiny strokes of added hair (artificial, or plucked from a mink’s coat) can create an instant, natural effect that enhances the all important eye contact you make.

Ruthie (at Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up, covent garden and the Away Spa, W Hotel) works with A-listers from the world of business and entertainment who want lashes for a natural effect. “We do the glamour lashes, the colours, the diamonds, anything you like. But the natural looking thicker, longer, or curlier lashes, are all that a lot of people never had and always wanted. “

The extensions are bonded to each of your natural eyelashes, rather than the lid. They’re safe. There’s no adhesive coming into contact with your skin. It just means they’ll last as long as the cycle of your natural lashes, so touch-ups are recommended every 2 – 3 weeks. You can also continue to wear make-up – just remember to use an oil-free make-up remover. So if your in or around London, take a trip to our Hair and Beauty salon in covent garden for a treat.
